The police are searching for a man who allegedly slapped a woman’s buttocks while riding his bike on Jackson Avenue.
The police said that a 33-year-old woman was walking on Jackson Ave, near 23rd Street, on April 22nd at 4 pm, when the male suspect rode his bicycle behind her and slapped her buttocks, before fleeing the scene.
The suspect is described as a 35-year-old Hispanic man, weighing approximately 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red baseball cap, a red waist length jacket and blue jeans.
Police are asking anyone with any information to call 1-800-577-TIPS.

I agree that that taking a report isn’t a huge use of resources, that having a sketch of the guy on file is a good thing in case he does something else, and that women should feel safe.
But, at what point did we become so helpless as individuals that we need the police to step in to address others being assholes? The 3 most likely reasons this happened are (1) the guy thought she was someone he knew, (2) the guy is new to the country and thought it was a way of flirting, or (3) the guy was a chauvinistic jerk who needs more respect for women.
We should also ask ourselves if everyone would be up in arms if the sexes were reversed. Somehow I think not. Why is that? Is it because we are so sexist that we think less of women’s ability to take care of themselves in broad daylight on a busy street, or is it because we must be So Serious about anything the brushes up against sexuality in this country? We are wound up so tight when it comes to interaction between the sexes, no wonder the rest of the world looks at us and just scratches their heads. We have become helpless little Puritans who are way too comfortable delegating everything to the police and other state services.
I mis-worded my argument. Sex is not relevant here. What is critical, is that people be free to be productive in our society without fear of physical molestation, or the significant distraction of concerns of physical defense. (Blah blah, put your own obvious argument about societal economic benefits/stability here.) To fail to provide state sanctioned recourse enables, and even endorses, piecemeal vigilante justice, and general social instability. If you disagree, visit neighborhoods and cities where your suggestions are common, people forgo legal recourse and preferr to “take care of it.” (South Side Chicago, East Brooklyn, Many rural areas etc.) This approach seemingly creates more problems than it resolves.
We really aren’t disagreeing on the core premise, just where to set the dial on the intensity of enforcement from the state vs tolerance for human stupidity/bad behavior. I tend to be a bit more laissez faire about behavior, since if you got ve the state an inch of control over the population, it will take a mile. Clearly the South Side of Chicago is too far in one direction.
David, you’re right: I bet the victim would concede that she wasn’t hurt. But, anything other than zero tolerance, supported by the full force of the law, sends the message there are no consequences for this behavior, and behaviors like this erode the safety and independence our daughters, mothers, wives, and neighbors have the right to feel. If resources are slim, increase funding, I know where they could find an extra $500k. But lack of funding isn’t reason for capitulation.
Besides it can’t take many resources to hear the victim out, sketch the guy, and release his picture to the media for public shaming. It’s not like there are finger prints, DNA samples and a round-the-clock helicopter searches.
Oh chill out ppl. She should take it as a complement and move the freak on. Police resources are scarce as is. More crime on streets than cops to solve it. David is right – let them have time to go solve real life threatening situations. Not this.

No, it’s not ok, but i’d get over it. Worse hss happened to me while living in new york city for past 15 yrs, as does to almost anyone if livingnhere long enough, yet i found nomreason tomalarm authorities and get them invokved wasting time. They are better off solving real crime and helping innocent people getting seriously hurt.

Dirtbag yes. But is this really something the police need to get involved with? Was the woman injured beyond her pride? What happened to a good yelling of “asshole” and moving on?
Before everyone piles on, the guy was clearly a jerk and his behavior was unacceptable, but I just think the police have better things to do with their time.
Yes, David, investigating assault is something the police should be involved with.
Yes, a slap on the butt is technically assault and, were resources infinite, should be investigated. But resources aren’t and she was not injured. At some point we all need to put on our big boy/girl pants and chalk up some behaviors to boorishness and insensitivity. Sorry it isn’t perfect, but that’s life.

For the record, “a slap on the butt” is not “technically assault” in New York State. In order for there to be an assault, there has to be an injury. See NY Penal Law, article 120. It’s probably, technically, a case of “forcible touching” (see NY Penal Law article 130 – Sex Offenses), which would be a class A misdemeanor. Anyway, either way, this guy’s a sleazebag loser, and no woman should have to put up with that.
They won’t. Nor should we really care.
