A one-mile run/walk is set to take place around the streets of Sunnyside and Woodside later this month to raise money for the Coalition for the Homeless.

The event, scheduled for Sunday, May 31, is for both runners and walkers—and school groups and community organizations are encouraged to participate.

“I think that this is a great way to bring the community together,” said Leonor White who is the organizer of the event “It is also a way to remind everyone of how many adults and children are homeless.”

White, who is an active runner, said that she aims to bring out both competitive runners and walkers. There will be medals presented to the fastest three runners in both the men’s and women’s categories. There will also be medals awarded to children (under 16 years) for the fastest three boys and girls.

The run-walk will cost $10 for adults and $5 for children, with the proceeds going to the homeless. Registration, however, with be $15 on the day for adults.

Participants will receive a Sunnyside Mile T-shirt.

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, a strong advocate for the homeless, will also be participating with some of his staff.

The event has been sponsored by a host of local businesses—such as Sunnyside Post, Bar 43, Dog and Duck, Merit Real Estate, Welcome Home Real Estate, The Skillman Project and Coffeed (see full list below).

“I would like to thank these sponsors for getting behind the event,” White said.

A representative from the Coalition for the Homeless will also be in attendance to thank participants and provide an overview of the housing crisis.

The event will start outside Lou Lodati Park on 43rd Street. Participants will then follow Barnett Avenue through to 50th Street before finishing at Skillman Ave (44th Street). The roads will be closed for the event.

Several bars and restaurants will be offering special menu items on the day to participants wearing Sunnyside Mile T-shirts. White said that it is important that people sign up early to ensure a T-shirt.

The event ceremony will begin at 10:00 am, with the adult competitive race starting at 10:30 am. The youth competitive race will take place at 10:45 followed by the run/walk for the general population at 11:00 am.

A medal ceremony will be held at 11:30 near the finishing line.

I wonder how much this is going to cost the City in police overtime. Events really should reimburse the City for this kind of expense.

Homeless men charged in deadly 7 train subway brawl in Woodside: DA

Three homeless men were arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Tuesday and variously charged with felony robbery, attempted gang assault, and assault for allegedly stealing the belongings of a 69-year-old homeless man who was asleep on a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Woodside early Sunday morning.

The victim woke up and tried to regain his property. During the ensuing brawl, the victim fatally stabbed a 37-year-old assailant and slashed a second man. The victim has not been charged in the fatal stabbing. The investigation by the NYPD’s Queens Homicide Squad and members of the 108th Precinct in Long Island City remains ongoing.
