The city will be holding a public meeting on police-community relations in Queens next week in Long Island City.

The community board meeting, organized every month by the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), will be held on Jan. 10 at the Long Island City Library, located at 37-44 21st St. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Several community advocates and commanding officers from area precincts will be in attendance at the meeting, including Captain Osvaldo Nunez, commanding officer of the 114th precinct, which covers most of Astoria, and Kenny Carter, founder of Fathers Alive in the Hood, a group that works across the five boroughs to address issues of gun violence and police brutality.

Among the items at next week’s meeting is the impact of the recently-passed Right to Know Act on police-civilian interactions. The new law requires police to inform people that they have a right to refuse a search without probable cause, and also requires officers to give out business cards after interactions with the public if no arrest is made.

While the meeting will focus on Queens, the CCRB said it welcomes all New Yorkers to share their experiences. Agency investigators will also be in attendance to receive complaints of police misconduct.

Data from the CCRB shows that the agency received 721 complaints from the borough of Queens as of Dec. 1 2017, accounting for 17 percent of all complaints received that year.
