Neighbors’ noisy complaints lead to closure of Lounge 47

A popular Long Island City bar/restaurant is closing, largely stemming from the forced closure of its outdoor patio/garden space.
Lounge 47 (47-10 Vernon Blvd.) will close on January 15th after eight contentious years in business, where it was subject to a barrage of noise complaints from several residents who lived adjacent to its outdoor garden.
“The landlord would not renew the lease…partly after we lost the use of the backyard,” wrote Min Chen, the manager of Lounge 47, on Facebook. She would not comment for this article.
William Garrett, a sound engineer who lived by Lounge 47, was one of the most vocal critics of the outdoor garden. The New York Times reported that he put together a number of Youtube (see below) videos detailing what life was like living next to the garden.
But the bar/restaurant had many loyal followers. Local food writer Julie Powell was one of its biggest supporters. Powell even consulted on the restaurant’s menu.
Julie Powell’s food blog was the basis for the hit movie “Julie and Julia” in 2009. The Nora Ephron film starred Amy Adams as Powell and Meryl Streep as Julia Child.
In the eight years since Lounge 47 first opened its doors, it had earned a reputation as a beloved neighborhood joint. Locals have become accustomed to its burgers and the laid-back vibe.
