Food Cellar to start selling draft beer this week

The owners of the Food Cellar, located at 4-85 47th Road, have built a section within the supermarket where draft beer will be served on tap.

Ovidio Teja, the manager of Food Cellar, said that he came up with the concept since he loves beer, especially good craft beer.  He said that many people don’t want to have to go to a bar in order to enjoy a draft beer; instead, they want it at home.

The new section will likely open on Monday or Tuesday—as Teja still awaits a piece of equipment to get the pump running for the taps. The beer on tap will largely be craft beer from places such as Brooklyn Brewery, Sixpoint and KelSo.

The taps are next to the cheese section and all residents have to do is pick up a reusable bottle and then ask an attendant to fill it up for them. The bottle is $4.

The store has already been offering a range of bottled beers—both local and overseas—for some time.

It took Teja about two months to build the section after getting old wood from a barn in Pennsylvania. He also installed custom-made refrigeration.

A 32-ounce growler will go for between $8.00 and $10.00. For a 64-ounce growler, the cost will be between $12.00 and $16.00.
